The German Longhaired Pointer has a strong, balanced outline and an elongated head with hanging ears. Its coat is usually brown, brown-and-white or roan. Longer hair feathers the legs, chest and tail. Its build combines sustained movement on land with capable swimming, while broad feet help on varied ground.
It developed from older bird dogs, water dogs and scent hounds, intended to create a versatile helper able to find, point and retrieve game. Planned pure breeding began in 1879. In 1897 Baron von Schorlemer drew up a standard, defining the desired appearance and maintaining a working direction for further development.
It is usually balanced, sociable and persistent. In shared activities it responds attentively to signals while independently investigating interesting ground. It enjoys scent work and finding objects. At home it can be calm and affectionate, becoming noticeably livelier outdoors among new smells. Gentleness accompanies patience with longer tasks.
