The German Hunting Terrier, or Jagdterrier, is a small, strong dog with a dark coat and tan markings. It has an elongated head, small folded ears and a compact outline. Smooth and rough-coated varieties occur; in the latter, hair gives the muzzle a more rugged appearance. Its build serves agility, nimbleness and the ability to work in confined spaces.
The breed was developed in Germany as a versatile hunting helper. The name Jagdterrier means hunting terrier and clearly reflects the breeding aim. Dogs were selected for underground work, tracking and other hunting tasks, with emphasis on working usefulness. Compared with breeds developed simultaneously for appearance, the Jagdterrier retains an exceptionally strong connection with practical hunting.
It is very active, determined and persistent. It willingly tackles tasks, and obstacles often increase its engagement rather than reduce it. It can cooperate attentively with its handler while retaining considerable initiative. Other animals' movement and scent can trigger strong responses. It also plays intensely and can remain interested in a chosen object for a long time.
