The Français Blanc et Noir is a large, long-legged hound with short hair and distinct black patches on white. It has an elongated head, drooping ears and a strong, proportionate body. Its appearance combines strength with lightness of movement. When running, its stride should remain free, without heaviness or stiffness.
The breed descends from Saintonge hounds. Its present type began developing in the second half of the 19th century, also influenced by the Poitevin and Gascon Saintongeois. It received a standard in 1957. It remained chiefly a pack hound valued for long hunts of large game.
It is usually friendly towards people and relatively easy to manage among other dogs. On a trail it shows concentration, endurance and keen interest in scent. A carrying voice helps locate it. While searching it makes its own decisions about the route ahead.
