The French Spaniel is a strong, athletic dog with a white-and-brown coat. Longer hair covers its ears, legs and tail, while the head is shorter-haired. It has a gentle expression and a proportionate, fairly broad head. Its build allows energetic movement for extended periods without appearing heavy.
It descends from French bird-hunting dogs described in old hunting works. The modern type was shaped by selecting dogs that efficiently located game and pointed it out to the hunter. James de Connick drew up the first standard in 1891. Despite its name, the French Spaniel is a pointing dog, and its duties also include retrieving, rather than only flushing birds from cover.
It is generally balanced, gentle and willing to cooperate. It can be sociable with other dogs and readily forms close relationships with household members. During activity it can focus intensely on scents and persistently explore its surroundings while remaining interested in its handler's signals. In everyday life its cheerful attitude accompanies a desire for movement, shared searching and carrying objects.
