The French Bulldog is a small, sturdy dog with a broad chest and a short, smooth coat. Large, upright ears with rounded tips are its most recognisable feature. It has a broad head, a short muzzle and a naturally short tail. Its compact frame gives it a solid appearance, while an alert expression and quick responses reveal its interest in nearby activity.
The modern breed developed in working-class districts of Paris during the second half of the nineteenth century, with contributions from small bulldogs and local dogs. Initially associated with traders, craftspeople and coachmen, its unusual appearance and sociability later attracted artists and wealthier residents. The first club formed in Paris in 1880, and the French kennel organisation recognised the breed in 1898.
French Bulldogs are usually interested in household members and enjoy their attention. They like short, lively games, resting together and joining daily activities. They can be inventive and persistent, with clear preferences. Many seek close contact, initiate play and closely watch their person’s reactions.
