The Flat-Coated Retriever is a lean, strong dog with a long head and a straight, glossy coat. Hair lies close to the body, with longer feathering on the legs, abdomen and tail. Colours are black or liver. Its head is less broad than a Labrador’s; a more elongated outline and light movement give it a distinctly different appearance.
The breed developed in Britain among dogs used to retrieve shot birds. A good nose, agility in dense vegetation and willingness to enter water were important. The dog had to find game and deliver it to its handler, so selection combined independent searching with cooperation. The Flat-Coat retained its working roots while also becoming a show and family dog.
It is generally outgoing, cheerful and very expressive. Enthusiasm involves the whole body, especially vigorous tail movement. It enjoys shared activities, carrying objects and exploring new places; exuberance may last well beyond puppyhood. It more often seeks human contact than keeps its distance, and repetitive inactivity does little to satisfy its curiosity and engagement.
