The Finnish Lapphund is a strong, medium-sized dog with a very dense coat and lively expression. It has erect or partly folded ears, a broad head and a bushy tail. Males often have a pronounced mane around the neck. It occurs in many colours, and its dense undercoat protects the body well in cold climates.
It descends from dogs used by the Sámi with reindeer in northern Europe. They helped move animals and guard homesteads, cooperating with people over vast spaces. Finland's first standard was drawn up in 1945, followed by gradual organisation of type and terminology. The modern breed retains its connection with this herding tradition, although many Lapphunds now serve chiefly as family dogs.
The Lapphund is usually friendly, quick to learn and attentive to people. It readily joins play and often comments on new events by barking. It can react quickly yet be calm and patient in familiar surroundings. Closeness to its owner matters; it enjoys shared activities and often readily reads everyday signals. It may initially be cautious with strangers before making relaxed contact.
