Fila Brasileiro — size comparison — facts and sources
The Fila Brasileiro is a large, substantial dog with an elongated body, broad head and distinctly loose skin. Characteristic folds are particularly evident on the neck. It can move both legs on one side together, producing the rolling gait called a pace.
The breed developed in Brazil from large working dogs kept on farms and estates. They helped with cattle, guarded property and took part in hunting large game. Their exact ancestry is less well documented than later pedigree breeding. The modern Fila retains a strong association with guarding, although many now live with families.
It may be deeply attached to familiar people and readily seek its person’s company. Towards strangers it is usually considerably more reserved, particularly on its own territory. A dog resting quietly may become decisive quickly if it perceives a threat. It may watch a visitor for a long time with a serious, focused expression.
