The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Field Spaniel is medium-sized with an elongated body and smooth, silky hair. Longer hair forms fringes on ears, legs and underside. It has a gentle expression and a strong build without excessive heaviness. Its outline allows free movement in vegetation, with less compact proportions than a Cocker's.
It descends from British land spaniels used for bird work. Its breeding history includes a period favouring extremely long bodies and short legs, restricting field capability. Later breeders sought to restore more functional proportions. Today's Field Spaniel results from preserving breed appearance while recovering freedom of movement and working ability.
With people it may be gentle, affectionate and sensitive. It readily joins shared activities while retaining some decision-making independence. It may first calmly investigate a new situation rather than react with immediate enthusiasm. Once interested in scent it becomes active and persistent.
