Smilodon — size comparison — facts and sources

Smilodon had elongated upper canines, powerful forelimbs and a short tail. It was not a tiger but belonged to a distinct extinct sabre-toothed cat lineage. It was a North American carnivore.

Numerous La Brea bones permit studies of anatomy, injuries and growth. Use of the huge canines is reconstructed biomechanically, while social behaviour remains interpretative. Illustrated colour and possible spots are not a secure pattern from a preserved individual.

Archiwalna karta San Diego Zoo podaje 100 cm wysokości w barkach dla Smilodon fatalis. To ogólny punkt rekonstrukcyjny, nie średnia dorosłych samców ani maksimum. Umaszczenie i niektóre tkanki miękkie pozostają interpretacją. Postawa i ujęcie przednie są przybliżone. Ilustracja nie jest fotografią ani pomiarem żywego osobnika.
