American lion — size comparison — facts and sources

The American lion was a large Ice Age cat. Long limbs and a powerful build placed it among the major predators of former North American ecosystems. The NPS lists camelids, bison, ground sloths and young mammoths among its potential prey.

Whether it regularly hunted alone or in groups is unknown. The name “lion” does not mean its behavioural details and mane were identical to those of living African lions.
