Estrela Mountain Dog — size comparison — facts and sources
The Estrela Mountain Dog is large and powerful with a dark facial mask and a distinctive hook-tipped tail. It occurs in short- and long-haired varieties. Both have dense coats suited to changeable mountain weather. A broad head, drop ears and solid body give it a hardy guardian's appearance.
It developed in Portugal's Serra da Estrela. It accompanied flocks moved between lower areas and mountain pastures, protecting animals from predators and theft. Its precise origins are lost in local pastoral history, but its regional association is firmly established. During the second half of the twentieth century it spread more widely beyond Portugal.
With familiar people it is usually devoted and gentle. It watches newcomers more carefully, often maintaining distance and monitoring their approach. It can independently decide that something needs investigation without constantly awaiting commands. It may be calm in familiar surroundings while remaining attentive to nearby events.
