The Entlebucher is the smallest of the four Swiss mountain dog breeds. It has a strong, slightly elongated body and a short, glossy black coat with reddish-brown tan and white markings. Drooping ears and alert eyes give it an attentive expression. It is compact, muscular and very active.
Its name comes from the Entlebuch valley in the Swiss cantons of Lucerne and Bern. Local dogs assisted with cattle and farm work, with agility and determination particularly valued in herding. The Entlebucher belongs to the shared Swiss tricoloured-dog tradition but was established as its own, smallest breed within this group.
It is energetic and usually highly engaged with its people. It learns quickly, readily joins activities and responds noticeably to changes nearby. It is often initially cautious with strangers but cheerful and playful among familiar people. It can communicate excitement emphatically, including vocally.
