English Toy Terrier — size comparison — facts and sources
The English Toy Terrier is a small, slender dog with short black hair and distinct reddish-brown tan markings. Its large erect ears have a characteristic candle-flame shape. A long head, dark eyes and gently arched back give it elegance. It moves lightly and quickly, immediately fixing its gaze on anything interesting.
It descends from old English black-and-tan terriers. Their ancestors killed rats, including in towns where speed and determination mattered. Small dogs increasingly bred for companionship gradually became distinct. Subsequent generations established a slender build, erect ears and clear black-and-tan colouring.
It is lively and attentive, wanting to know what happens nearby. It enjoys close companionship and household activities. Sudden movement or a small animal can immediately attract its attention. It may also alert to unfamiliar sounds. Play reveals courage, initiative and rapid reactions inherited from working terriers.
