The King Charles Spaniel is a small dog with a rounded head, large dark eyes and a very short muzzle. Its long ears carry silky hair, which also forms fringes on the legs and tail. Its body is compact, and its overall appearance gentle and soft. The shorter muzzle and skull shape clearly distinguish it from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
It belongs to the small spaniels long kept at English and continental European courts. The name commemorates King Charles II, associated with a fondness for these dogs. Later contributions from small Eastern dogs and selection for increasingly short muzzles established today's type. The Cavalier, by contrast, arose from interest in the older spaniel appearance known from historical depictions.
The King Charles is usually gentle and strongly attached to familiar people. It often seeks quiet closeness, enjoys accompanying household members and watches their behaviour attentively. It can be reserved in new relationships, needing time to become comfortable. It can nevertheless respond lively to play and express joy very directly. Its sociability usually centres on intimate companionship rather than constant new acquaintances.
