English Shepherd — size comparison — facts and sources

The English Shepherd is a medium-sized, capable dog with a moderately long coat and drop or partly folded ears. It has a proportionate body and an animated, attentive face. Lines differ in colouring and coat abundance. Appearance remained subordinate to ability in varied farm work.

Despite its name it developed in the United States from herding dogs imported from England and southern Scotland. It worked various livestock, guarded the home and controlled pests. It was selected as a versatile family helper. A broad range of skills was maintained rather than breeding solely for shows or one herding discipline.

It is intelligent, attentive and cooperative but can also act without awaiting a command. Around livestock it usually works upright without concentrating on prolonged, motionless staring. It can adjust the strength of its response to circumstances. After work it may rest quietly near people while retaining interest in nearby events.
