The English Setter is an elegant dog with long legs, a gentle expression and a silky coat. Longer hair forms soft feathering on the ears, underside, legs and tail. Characteristic fine flecks give the pale coat a speckled appearance. Its light but strong build is evident in smooth movement and the ability to search widely across country.
Nineteenth-century British breeding shaped the modern breed. Edward Laverack began his programme with a pair bought in 1825, while Richard Purcell Llewellin later developed lines particularly valued for hunting ability. Setters found birds and indicated their location to the hunter. This history explains why dogs within the same breed can differ somewhat in build and working intensity.
English Setters are generally warm and gentle with people. They enjoy staying close to family and may greet familiar people very affectionately. In the field they show much more energy, with bird scent and movement quickly capturing attention. The shift between calm contact at home and excitement in open country is particularly characteristic.
