The English Pointer is a slender, long-legged dog with a short coat and a distinctly athletic build. It has a deep chest, strong back and long tail carried almost in line with the body while working. Its smooth coat clearly reveals muscular movement. It is most characteristic on point, using its entire body to indicate the direction of located game.
The breed was developed in Britain to find birds across extensive fields. The dog had to search quickly, detect scent and stop before flushing the birds. Its name comes from the English verb 'point'. Breeding valued a wide-ranging, efficient run, a good nose and clear indication of location, making the Pointer a particularly recognisable pointing breed.
It is generally gentle, friendly and interested in human contact. Outdoors it shows considerable energy, with open spaces and bird scents quickly attracting attention. It can remain active for a long time while concentrating on its surroundings. At home it may be much calmer and enjoys resting close to people. It therefore combines gentleness in relationships with intense, fully engaged field activity.
