The English Foxhound is a tall, strongly built scent hound with a short coat and long legs. It has a broad chest, strong back and drooping ears. Its appearance serves endurance: it should move at a steady, efficient pace for a long time. A high-carried tail and focused examination of the ground are also characteristic.
The breed was developed in Britain for fox hunting in large packs. Breeders kept detailed ancestry records, and books associated with the Masters of Foxhounds Association contain pedigrees reaching back before 1800. Dogs were selected for following a trail, maintaining pace and working together. Such prolonged working selection distinguishes the Foxhound from many breeds developed chiefly as family dogs.
The Foxhound is usually friendly and comfortable with other dogs. It shows considerable independence in seeking an interesting scent, and its attention may remain focused on one trail for a long time. It is active, persistent and vocal; the company of a group and opportunities to move are particularly important to it.
