The English Cocker Spaniel is a compact, sturdy dog with long drop ears and dark, expressive eyes. Its silky coat forms feathering on the ears, legs and belly. Colours range from solid black or golden to parti-colour and roan. Show lines are usually more heavily built than working lines.
It descends from British land spaniels that flushed birds from dense vegetation. Smaller dogs were used particularly for woodcock, giving rise to the name cocker. The Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1893. Later breeding in the United States produced a different type, and in 1946 the American Kennel Club separated English and American Cockers as two breeds.
Cockers are often cheerful, affectionate and interested in what people are doing. On walks they investigate undergrowth and scents, frequently with an energetic tail. They can become absorbed in searching or retrieving and enjoy exploring. Their enthusiasm and expressiveness vary between individuals and breeding lines.
