English Bulldog — size comparison — facts and sources

The English Bulldog is a stocky dog with a broad head, a short muzzle and powerful shoulders. It has a smooth coat, loose skin on the head and a characteristically projecting lower jaw. The front of the body is broad and the hindquarters narrower. Short legs and distinctive proportions produce a recognisable gait, quite different from the lighter movement of terriers or pointing dogs.

Bull recalls the breed’s former use in bull-baiting. After the practice was banned in nineteenth-century Britain, its role began to change. Breeders preserved the breed while selecting for showing and companionship. Successive generations established a shorter muzzle, a stockier outline and a temperament valued in close contact with people.

Bulldogs usually enjoy family company and calm attention. They can be cheerful, affectionate and playful, although they often act at their own pace. When interested in something, they may pursue it firmly and persistently. They generally do not seek constant activity in familiar surroundings, but express their preferences clearly and know exactly whom they want to rest beside.
