The Dutch Smoushond is a small dog with a yellowish, harsh coat and abundant beard. Bushy eyebrows and loosely lying hair give it a somewhat dishevelled appearance. Its body is strong and fairly compact, with capable legs. Its face remains expressive, and its dark eyes and nose contrast with the lighter coat.
In the nineteenth century these dogs accompanied horses and carriages in the Netherlands and killed rats in stables. They were sold, among other things, as stable dogs for wealthier city residents. Interest later declined, and the last litter of the old population was recorded in 1949. In 1973, H.M. Barkman van der Weel began its restoration using similar-looking dogs. Modern breeding is the result of that reconstruction.
The Smoushond is usually cheerful, affectionate and sociable. It enjoys joining daily family life and can be lively and inventive during play. New places often arouse its curiosity and prompt calm exploration. The breed is described as relaxed and not particularly timid; its energy alternates with an ability to unwind beside its people.
