The Dunker is a Norwegian hound with a strong, elongated body, drooping ears and a short coat. Merle colouring is particularly characteristic, although dogs in other permitted colours also occur. Some have pale blue eyes. It has substantial feet and a deep chest and can maintain a steady running pace for a long time.
The breed bears the name of Wilhelm Conrad Dunker, who crossed various hounds in Norway during the first half of the nineteenth century. The goal was a good hare-hunting helper. Interest fluctuated over subsequent decades, and the small population became increasingly related. Later controlled crosses with other dogs aimed to increase diversity while preserving characteristic type and abilities.
The Dunker is usually open, sociable and relatively calm in everyday contact. It willingly cooperates with people without abandoning initiative. An interesting trail can absorb it deeply and prompt a long, systematic search. Its everyday behaviour combines closeness to people with a clear need to explore independently.
