The Dogo Argentino is a large, athletic dog with short white hair and a broad, powerful head. It has a deep chest, well-muscled legs and capable, free movement. Its pale coat clearly reveals its build. It should combine considerable strength with the endurance needed in demanding terrain.
Antonio Nores Martínez developed the breed in Argentina's Córdoba province. He sought a big-game hunting dog capable of sustained effort and working alongside other dogs. The breeding programme aimed to establish suitable build, courage and scenting ability. It therefore originated as a specialised hunting dog, later also serving as a companion and guardian.
It is usually devoted to familiar people and eager to participate in shared activities. When interested in a task it can act with great persistence and determination. Moving animals may provoke strong arousal, and relationships with other dogs can be demanding. It watches its surroundings carefully and may remain reserved with new people.
