Tyrannosaurus — size comparison — facts and sources

Tyrannosaurus lived around 68–66 million years ago, near the end of the Cretaceous, in western North America. It walked on powerful hind legs, with a huge head contrasting with short forelimbs. Massive jaws and thick, serrated teeth could crush bone. The brain region associated with smell suggests an important role for scent in finding food.

It hunted and scavenged. Tooth marks occur on Triceratops and Edmontosaurus bones, and swallowed bone fragments survive in fossilised droppings. Some tyrannosaur skeletons also bear bites, indicating encounters with other large predators, including members of their own species.

Numerous skeletons reveal changes during growth: juveniles differed in proportion from heavily built adults. The function of the short arms remains debated. Nor is there conclusive evidence of coordinated pack hunting.
