Triceratops — size comparison — facts and sources

Triceratops was a massive, four-legged herbivore of the final millions of years of the Cretaceous in North America. Two long horns above the eyes, a shorter nasal horn and a broad bony frill crowned its huge skull. Living horns had keratin coverings that extended beyond the preserved bony cores.

A sharp beak cropped plants, while rows of teeth formed cutting surfaces for tougher food. It lived alongside Tyrannosaurus. Some bones show bite marks and healing, indicating survival after an encounter.

Horns and frills probably also played roles in display and competition between individuals. Known skulls differ in shape and size, partly through growth. Triceratops horridus is one of two widely recognised species, alongside Triceratops prorsus.
