Torvosaurus — size comparison — facts and sources

Torvosaurus was a large predatory dinosaur of Late Jurassic Portugal. It inhabited areas where rivers and floodplains supplied water and plant food to numerous herbivores. Its food-web position is reconstructed from teeth and fossils of the surrounding fauna. Hunting large animals is probable, but neither its full prey list nor the contribution of carrion is known.

The Portuguese species was separated from the North American Torvosaurus tanneri in 2014 following comparisons of jaw structure. The name gurneyi honours author and illustrator James Gurney. Research shows similarities between faunas on either side of today's Atlantic while also revealing the distinctiveness of European animals.
