Therizinosaurus — size comparison — facts and sources

Therizinosaurus lived in Late Cretaceous Mongolia. Huge elongated claws on three-fingered hands are its defining feature. A theropod, it is nevertheless interpreted through better-known relatives as chiefly plant-eating, with a heavy body and long neck.

Claws may have drawn vegetation closer or served in threatening displays, but their function remains debated. The species is known chiefly from limb bones and ribs, so reconstructed heads and bodies rely heavily on other therizinosaurs.

The first remains were mistakenly associated with a giant turtle. Later discoveries allowed recognition of this unusual dinosaur and its placement among theropods.
