Staurikosaurus was one of the very early dinosaurs and lived in the Late Triassic in what is now Brazil. It was a carnivore in a world where dinosaurs had not yet come to dominate all large land animals. Present-day sites in the Santa Maria Formation document the coexistence of many distinct vertebrate lineages.

Edwin Colbert described the species in 1970. Its name refers to the Southern Cross, a constellation associated with the discovery location. The incomplete skeleton provides valuable evidence about early dinosaur evolution, but parts of its appearance require comparison with relatives.
