Spinosaurus — size comparison — facts and sources

Spinosaurus was a giant Cretaceous predator of North Africa. It had a narrow, elongated snout with conical teeth and a tall sail supported by vertebral projections. Newer discoveries revealed relatively short hindlegs and a deep, laterally flattened tail unlike those of many terrestrial theropods.

It lived around fish-rich rivers and wetlands. Snout anatomy indicates fish capture, although other vertebrates may also have been eaten. A connection with water is well supported; swimming efficiency and whether it actively pursued submerged prey or chiefly fed near shores remain debated.

The first described Egyptian remains were destroyed during the Second World War. Moroccan material enabled revised reconstructions. Sail function, body proportions and locomotion continue to be tested through anatomy and biomechanical models.
