Riojasaurus — size comparison — facts and sources

Riojasaurus was a Late Triassic sauropodomorph from Argentina. Its name refers to La Rioja province. It occupied the role of a large plant consumer in terrestrial ecosystems before the characteristic communities of giant Jurassic sauropods developed. Sources also allow some other food, but there is no direct record of its whole diet or seasonal changes.

José Bonaparte described the species in 1969. Finds include many skeletons and different growth stages, allowing this lineage's development to be studied. The number of individuals found does not itself prove permanent herds, so social behaviours remain cautiously expressed hypotheses.
