Panphagia comes from the Late Triassic river environment of Ischigualasto in Argentina. Tooth structure led researchers to propose a mixed diet combining different food types.

The species helps explain the development of plant feeding in the lineage leading to later sauropodomorphs. It was described in 2009 from an incomplete skeleton found during fieldwork. The preserved individual was not yet fully grown.
