Inostrancevia was a predatory synapsid from the Late Permian, neither a dinosaur nor a cat. Inostrancevia alexandri is known from Russian sites. It occupied a high position in food webs containing numerous terrestrial herbivores. Species of this whole lineage lived during a growing environmental crisis that ended in one of Earth's largest mass extinctions.

Studies of South African finds have expanded the known range of the genus Inostrancevia, but do not permit all specimens simply to be combined into one species. Changes in predator communities help trace ecosystem destabilisation.
