Giganotosaurus — size comparison — facts and sources

Giganotosaurus was among the largest predatory dinosaurs of Cretaceous Patagonia. It walked on two legs and had narrow, laterally compressed teeth with serrated edges in long jaws. This form suited cutting flesh. It lived many millions of years before Tyrannosaurus, among a different animal community.

It may have eaten large herbivores, including sauropods, as well as carrion. Which prey dominated remains unknown. Cooperation between several individuals attacking huge sauropods remains a hypothesis.

Rubén Carolini discovered the first specimen in Patagonia in 1993, and the species was named two years later. No complete skeleton is preserved. Length and mass estimates therefore partly depend on assumed proportions for missing elements, making its rank among the largest theropods uncertain.
