Dimetrodon — size comparison — facts and sources

Dimetrodon was a predatory synapsid of the Early Permian, living in what is now North America. It appeared much earlier than dinosaurs and was more closely related to mammals than to them. Its teeth indicate carnivory, but the precise contribution of different prey types is difficult to establish.

The function of its dorsal sail remains debated. Temperature regulation, communication and a reproductive role have been proposed, but the elongated vertebral processes alone do not provide a single certain answer. The genus contained many species; this profile represents Dimetrodon grandis.
