Dilophosaurus — size comparison — facts and sources

Dilophosaurus was a bipedal Early Jurassic predator of North America. Two thin head crests gave it its name. In life they were probably covered by keratin and may therefore have been larger and somewhat differently shaped than the preserved bone.

Sharp, curved teeth and jaw structure indicate vertebrate hunting. It lived among rivers and shifting dunes. The crests may have served display or recognition; their delicate structure is poorly suited to direct combat.

The first Arizona remains were initially assigned to Megalosaurus. Discovery of a crested skull helped establish a separate genus. The film portrayal of a neck frill and venom spraying is fiction unsupported by fossils.
