Desmatosuchus — size comparison — facts and sources

Desmatosuchus was an aetosaur, an armoured relative of crocodiles from Late Triassic North America. Sources indicate the importance of plant food, but aetosaur diets may have been more varied. The animal lived in terrestrial landscapes whose rivers and sediments preserved a rich record of ancient ecosystems.

The bony armour elements are particularly important in identifying aetosaurs and comparing their species. The function of the elaborate spikes is considered in terms of both protection and signalling. These functions remain hypotheses; reconstructions of appearance combine evidence from different skeletal parts.
