Ceratosaurus — size comparison — facts and sources

Ceratosaurus was a carnivorous Late Jurassic dinosaur known from North America among other regions. It had a distinctive snout horn and a row of small bony plates along the back. Its remains are much rarer than Allosaurus bones from the same deposits.

The horn was probably a display structure, helping attract mates or recognise members of the same species. Sharp teeth indicate carnivory. It may have eaten herbivorous dinosaurs and aquatic animals, but their relative contributions to its diet remain uncertain.

The first well-preserved skeleton was discovered in Colorado in 1883. Much of it remained articulated, allowing its anatomy to be reconstructed more accurately from the outset than that of many dinosaurs known only from isolated fragments.
