Brontosaurus was a Late Jurassic North American herbivore. Four powerful legs supported its massive body, with a long, thick neck and elongated tail. It lived in Morrison Formation environments alongside other sauropods and large predators.
For over a century Brontosaurus was treated as a junior synonym of Apatosaurus. An extensive skeletal analysis published in 2015 supported separating the genus again. Brontosaurus excelsus remains a close relative of Apatosaurus, distinguished by a combination of bone characteristics.
