Brachiosaurus was a tall, four-legged sauropod of Late Jurassic North America. Its forelimbs were longer than its hind limbs, so the body rose towards the shoulders. Together with a long neck, this allowed it to reach high foliage.
It ate plants, probably including conifers. Unlike dinosaurs with elaborate tooth batteries, it did not grind food extensively; a large digestive tract processed swallowed plant material. Neck movement is reconstructed from vertebrae and comparisons with relatives.
The first remains were found in Colorado in 1900. The American Brachiosaurus altithorax is known from an incomplete skeleton. African Giraffatitan brancai, once placed in the same genus, is a separate animal. Many older Brachiosaurus reconstructions were based on its bones.
