Apatosaurus was a substantial quadrupedal herbivore of Late Jurassic North America. It had a strongly built long neck, small head and elongated tail. It lived in Morrison ecosystems, where many sauropods used plant resources. Narrow teeth gathered plants, while the long neck expanded feeding reach without moving the whole body.
Its identification history is linked to the long debate about Brontosaurus. Naming changes result from renewed comparisons of bones and diagnostic features.
