Ankylosaurus — size comparison — facts and sources

Ankylosaurus lived in North America near the end of the Cretaceous, alongside Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops. It was a broad, low-bodied quadruped protected by bony armour. A heavy club tipped the tail. A beak at the front of the mouth was followed by small teeth used to process food.

It ate low-growing plants. A heavy build and armour hindered attackers, and the club was probably swung sideways. Both defence against predators and contests with members of its own species are considered possible roles.

The first bones were discovered in Montana in the early twentieth century. No complete skeleton has been found, and many armour elements survive separately. Their exact arrangement along the back therefore remains partly reconstructed through comparisons with other ankylosaurids.
