The Dalmatian is an athletic dog with a short white coat marked with black or liver spots. Long legs, a deep chest and a strong, tapering tail give it a powerful yet light outline. Its movement is a free, steady trot. Each dog has its own pattern of spots.
The breed takes its name from Dalmatia, and similar dogs appear in old Croatian paintings. Dalmatians accompanied horse-drawn carriages and guarded horses and stables. Their association with fire services dates from horse-drawn fire engines. Breeding became more organised in Britain, where a standard was drawn up in the late nineteenth century.
Usually outgoing and lively, the Dalmatian enjoys family activities, long outings and exploring new places. It can also be independent and persistent when something catches its interest. Quiet rest at home may alternate with considerable enthusiasm during shared activities.
