The Standard Smooth-haired Dachshund has a long body, a deep chest and short, strong legs. Drop ears frame the elongated head, while the close-fitting coat reveals firm muscles. It is the largest of the three Dachshund sizes. Despite its low outline, it moves purposefully and investigates ground scents with close attention.
Dachshunds developed in Germany from hounds selected for underground work. Short legs allowed entry into burrows, but their work also included tracking wounded game above ground and giving voice on a trail. The German Dachshund club was founded in 1888. Three sizes and three coat types eventually became established, forming nine varieties of one breed.
Dachshunds are generally curious, bold and attached to their people. They can be affectionate and entertaining while remaining determined in pursuit of a goal. An interesting scent readily absorbs their attention. They quickly recognise household routines and remember ways to attract attention.
