The Curly Coated Retriever is a tall, powerful dog covered in small, tight curls. Its coat is black or brown, with short, smooth hair on the muzzle and fronts of the legs. A wedge-shaped head, hanging ears and deep chest complete its outline. The curly coat helped during work in water and wet vegetation.
Developed in Britain to retrieve shot game, it was among the retrievers established early; it appeared at the Birmingham show in 1860. Dogs also reached Australia and New Zealand, where their waterfowl work was valued. The precise contributions of individual historical water-dog types are not fully documented.
Usually confident and willing to work, it retains substantial independence. Affectionate and playful with familiar people, it may be reserved with strangers. It quickly understands new tasks but can tire of repetition without variety. Activities allowing resourcefulness appeal to it; an interesting problem can prompt calm, persistent work rather than simple responses to successive commands.
