The long-wattled umbrellabird inhabits wet forests on the western Andean slopes in Colombia and Ecuador. It is primarily fruit-eating. By carrying seeds between feeding sites it contributes to forest regeneration.
Males gather at traditional display grounds, showing their ornaments and voices. Females visit to choose a mate. The long, feathered throat appendage forms part of the courtship display.
Studies have shown that this breeding system also affects plant dispersal. Males regularly attending a display ground deposit many previously eaten seeds there. The birds' meeting site can therefore change the distribution of future trees.
