Helmeted hornbill — size comparison — facts and sources

The helmeted hornbill lives in extensive Southeast Asian forests. Figs are particularly important in its diet, but it also obtains animal food. It moves between fruiting trees, and suitable old forests are fundamental to its life.

The massive casque above its bill plays a part in unusual contests: birds can collide with it in flight. Observations link such behaviour to competition over status, space or food resources.

The same casque has made it a target of intensive poaching because its material is used to carve ornaments. Trade and forest loss together threaten the species.
