The Continental Bulldog is a medium-sized, strongly muscular dog with a short coat and broad head. It retains a bulldog appearance but has more evident legs and a less extremely shortened muzzle than many modern English Bulldogs. Its body is compact and its movement free. Colours vary, so recognition rests chiefly on its build and head shape.
The breed originated in Switzerland from crosses between English Bulldogs and Olde English Bulldogges. Breeders wanted a medium-sized dog with a less exaggerated build and greater agility. Successive generations began to form a distinct, consistent type. The name Continental Bulldog was chosen specifically to distinguish the new breed from the English Bulldog, from which it partly descends.
It is generally friendly, confident and attentive to people. It likes joining daily activities, readily makes contact and can enthusiastically join play. In familiar situations it is usually relaxed and calm. With its family it can be direct and affectionate, moving easily from activity to quiet rest in a familiar setting.
