The Sabueso Fino Colombiano is a Colombian scent hound with a strong, elongated body and long drooping ears. Its short coat occurs in various colours, and lines may differ in size and details of build. It combines endurance with light movement. A broad nose and attentive expression suit a dog eager to investigate every new scent.
The breed developed from hounds and some pointing dogs brought to Colombia from Europe and North America from colonial times onwards. They served wealthy sport hunters as well as rural people obtaining food. Dogs were kept in very different landscapes and climates, favouring selection for practical ability. Only later was this local tradition brought into organised breeding.
With its people the Fino can be affectionate and sociable. It can usually live among other dogs and is often friendly to newcomers. While scenting, however, it shows considerable determination and initiative. A discovered trail may hold its attention for a long time, even when other dogs or people switch activities. It is a dog that becomes deeply engaged in its discoveries.
