The Cockapoo is a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle cross rather than a uniform breed with one standard. It may have the Spaniel's longer ears and stronger build or a more slender body and curlier Poodle coat. Size depends partly on the Poodle variety used. Even closely related dogs may differ in head shape, hair structure and proportions.
The name combines those of its parent breeds. Crosses were developed primarily as companions, combining two breeds with different appearances but shared hunting roots. Cockapoos include both first-generation crosses and dogs from later matings. Breeders do not all follow the same principles, so the term alone does not precisely describe an individual dog's ancestry.
Many Cockapoos are sociable, active and interested in shared play. They may enjoy retrieving, scenting and close companionship with people. The strength of these inclinations varies, as do sensitivity and responses to strangers. Poodle ancestry does not determine an absence of shedding, and the parent breeds' friendly dispositions do not mean identical temperaments in every descendant.
